What “Yapping” Reveals About Connection, Trust, and Leadership at Work

Welcome to “The Connect Effect Conversations,” where we explore innovative ways to relearn the art of deeper connections in this digital age for leaders, teams, and customers.

Let’s talk about “yapping.”

It might sound like a throwaway Gen Z trend — but it reveals something much deeper about how people connect, communicate, and build trust today.

Because in a world of constant communication, the real challenge isn’t talking more.

👉 It’s creating connection that actually means something.

The Question: What is Yapping?

According to Merriam-Webster, to yap is “to talk in a shrill insistent way” — the human conversational equivalent of a hairless Chihuahua’s bark.

The ability to “yap” is actually a compliment and a valuable skill embraced by Gen Z on platforms like TikTok. To “yap” means to have the ability to talk about anything, reflecting an essential aspect of social connection.

And in a digital-first world, that matters more than we think.

Because what looks like casual conversation is often doing something important:

  • building familiarity
  • reducing social friction
  • creating a sense of belonging

Why Yapping and Small Talk Matters

What we often dismiss as “small talk” is actually a critical driver of connection.

Experts believe it can increase collaboration, innovation, and well-being. A study conducted by the University of Kansas found that small talk positively impacts employees by boosting their positive social emotions and sense of connection throughout the workday (KU School of Business). Another study published in the Journal of Language and Speech found that higher levels of reciprocal conversation during small talk are associated with increased task enjoyment and productivity (Well+Good). Ultimately, engaging in small talk builds TRUST and strengthens workplace and customer relationships.

Research consistently shows that informal conversation:

  • builds trust between colleagues
  • increases collaboration and openness
  • improves wellbeing and engagement
  • strengthens team culture

Even something as simple as a quick conversation can:

👉 shift how people feel about their work
👉 and how connected they feel to others

And connection is what drives performance.

The Leadership Gap: Communication vs Connection

Here’s the real issue.

Most organisations optimise for communication:

  • more meetings
  • more updates
  • more tools

But communication alone doesn’t create alignment.

Connection does.

Because people don’t act on information.

👉 They act on what they trust, understand, and feel part of.

Why This Matters for Leaders

This is where Connection-Driven Leadership becomes critical.

Because in modern workplaces — especially hybrid and fast-moving environments — leaders are not just managing tasks.

They are shaping:

  • trust
  • clarity
  • alignment
  • and connection across teams

And without those, even the best strategy struggles to land.

The Opportunity: Rethinking “Yapping” at Work

Instead of dismissing “yapping,” what if we reframed it?

Not as noise.

But as a signal.

A signal that people are looking for:

  • connection
  • belonging
  • shared experience

The opportunity isn’t to eliminate it.

👉 It’s to channel it intentionally.

Yapping meets Tech

How can we combine the best of human connection with the best of technology at work and with customers? Here are a few ideas:

  • Virtual Watercooler Tools: Schedule informal chats and encourage spontaneous interactions among remote team members, or make sure you schedule on additional time to meetings for these types of informal conversations.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): Utilise AR/VR for more immersive small talk experiences, making virtual interactions feel more personal and engaging.
  • AI-Powered Icebreakers: Implement AI tools to suggest conversation starters and topics based on participants’ interests and recent activities. Like personalised ice breakers, or conversation prompts.

Tips: Yap Well… Questions to Prompt Small Talk

  1. About Them NOW: In virtual settings, start by asking about their current situation to make the conversation more personal and engaging. Example: “What has been keeping you busy lately?”
  2. About Them WORK: Inquire about their current work to understand their professional context and establish a connection based on shared experiences. Example: “What projects are you currently working on that you’re excited about?”
  3. About Them NEXT: Ask about their future plans or goals to show interest in their aspirations and long-term vision.Example: “What are your upcoming goals or projects you’re looking forward to?

In a Disconnected World, Connection Is the Advantage

We don’t need more communication.

We need better connection.

Because the teams that perform best aren’t the ones who talk the most.

👉 They’re the ones who trust, align, and connect the fastest.
